Saalachtal | Lofer | Waidring Guide

The Salzburger Saalachtal is comprised of two popular and family friendly ski resorts: Almenwelt Lofer and Heutal in Unken. Both represent the best of the Pinzgau hospitality and idyllic landscapes. Offering mostly flat and broad pistes, the two areas are ideal for beginners and families with small children. In close vicinity you will find the ski resort of Steinplatte-Waidring. Located in the “Drei-Länder” region between Tyrol, Salzburg, and Bavaria, you can access slopes both from German and Austrian side. This attractive resort offers some excellent and varied ski terrain and modern facilities. All resorts are extremely well accessible and perfect for short weekend trips - you will reach Salzburg in 45min drive and other popular towns such as Zell am See or Saalfelden are also within short drive.

Winter Season & Ski

The winter season offers unlimited opportunities to enjoy the suncapped mountains and fresh air. Starting with skiing, whilst the Almenwelt Lofer and Heutal in Unken are a top choice for families and beginners with its wide selection of easy, flat and broad slopes, the Steinplatte/Waidring terrain will surprise you with some more challenging terrains and importantly its great snow park with 24 obstacles for a playful ride from waves, steep turns, tunnels, boxes to a large “fun-twister”. If you would like to explore some other nearby ski areas, there are no limits and the “3 Länder Freizeit-Arena“ lift pass makes that possible. It covers further 5 resorts - Erpfendorf – Lärchenhof, Skilifte Kirchdorf, Skistar St. Johanner Bergbahnen, Bergbahn Pillersee – Buchensteinwand, Skigebiet Winklmoosalm – Reit im Winkl. For fans of other winter sports, there is also plenty to enjoy. Touring the scenic Saalachtal area on snowshoes or cross-country skiing is very popular and takes you through a varied landscapes, romantic snowy paths, crossing rivers and pastures, climbing to vantage points and meeting the occasional wild mountain animals. For the perfect post-ski unwind, you can check out the public swimming pool in Lofer or, if you don’t mind a short drive, the Rupertustherme in Bad Reichenhall offer impeccable facilities for the ultimate relaxation. And if you are after some extra adrenaline, why not join the snow-kiting school in Lofer.

Summer Season

In summer, the whole area is a paradise for every lover of hiking, biking and outdoors in general. Whether you want to climb up the peaks yourself, take an e-mountain bike or use the gondola to take you up, you can look forward to an unforgettable experience. The mountain massifs are imposing and the surrounding nature will impress you with its purity and variety. The rocks of the Steinplatte also offer enjoyable setting for hikers and climbers. Seasoned climbers will appreciate the variety of routes and difficulty levels (alpine multiple-pitch routes up to 8SL) with some well challenging and equally breathtaking via ferratas. Down in the valley, you should definitely visit the rapids of the Teufelsschlucht, a great destination for an fans of kayaking, rafting or canyoning. Once a year, this place hosts a competition called  Lofer Rodeo watched by thousands of onlookers. The little ones will be amazed at the “Triassic Park”, an amusement park located at the top of the Steinplatte Gondola offering a range of fun trails and experiences, all focussed on the prehistoric dinosaurs world.

Food Scene

Tradition and customs play an important part in the life in Pinzgau and the same goes with traditional gastronomy. Whether it is a stop in one of the traditional mountain huts during your hike or visit to one of the yearly festivals and events such as the famous Harvest Festival, you are guaranteed to taste some of the best local specialties from the typical Jaus’n to seasonal spreads, fresh cheeses, homemade jams and gingerbread cookies.
